Stem Wall Foundations

Stem Wall Foundations:

A Modern Reflection of Louisiana’s Raised Acadian Homes

When building a home in South Louisiana, the foundation isn’t just a starting point — it’s what determines the structure’s long-term performance, durability, and resistance to moisture and soil movement. One of the most reliable options in our region is the stem wall foundation.

What Is a Stem Wall Foundation?

A stem wall foundation consists of:

  • A continuous concrete footing poured below grade

  • A short vertical concrete or masonry wall (the stem wall) built on top of the footing

  • A slab poured inside the stem wall perimeter

This system has been used for decades in areas with expansive soils, high water tables, and warm climates — and for good reason. The following points are why we build with stem wall foundations

1. Better moisture and drainage control

In Louisiana, water is the enemy of foundations.

A stem wall raises the slab above grade, helping:

• Keep water away from the home
• Reduce soil saturation under the slab
• Lower the risk of cracking and settling
• Improve long-term durability

2. Stronger structure in challenging soils

Soft and expansive soils are common across Acadiana.

Stem walls:

✔ Spread loads better
✔ Reduce slab movement
✔ Perform better during wet/dry cycles

3. Architectural Appeal and Cultural Relevance

Across South Louisiana, some of the most beloved historic homes share a common feature — they are built off grade and elevated above the ground. Long before modern drainage systems and concrete slabs existed, Acadian builders understood that lifting a home off grade was a practical solution.

Today, stem wall foundations carry this same principle forward, blending modern engineering with the timeless architectural language of traditional Louisiana homes. The result is a foundation system that protects the structure while enhancing curb appeal.

In architectural design, the base, middle, and capital are essential components that contribute to the overall structure and aesthetic of a building. When building with a stem wall foundation, the home has a more prominent base.
